Racing pigeons, also known as “racing homers,” might look like the birds you see hanging out at the park or sitting on rooftops, but they’re actually quite different. For starters, racing pigeons can find their way home from anywhere, even hundreds of miles away. Scientists have tried to figure out how they do it, but their homing instinct remains a mystery.
Racing pigeons are also very fast. They can fly up to 60 miles per hour, the same speed as a car driving on the highway. Plus, they have great endurance that allows them to fly for several hours without stopping to rest. Racing pigeons are not only incredible athletes, they are beautiful, friendly birds that families around the world have enjoyed raising—and racing—for centuries.
