Being a pigeon fancier in the winter months is a quiet, steadfast commitment. One that is challenged to its core on days when the temperatures fall below zero. I’ve been using this time to bond with my birds. I talk with them a little each day so they get used to the sound of my voice. On the really cold days it’s a quick hello as I change their food and water. On the milder days, we have time for more in-depth conversation as they eat from the palm of my hand. Some days they let me pick them up and pet their heads and wings, other days they run in the opposite direction.
Tomorrow is the first day of spring, and even though there’s an entire world of adventure waiting just beyond the coop walls, I’ve enjoyed our first winter together. Without meaning to, these speedy creatures have shown me how to slow down.
